Answering: Vlad Rommel (vocals), Khort (bass)

1. Can you tell us a little bit about the band for those that have never heard of you before?
Vlad Rommel: I created SYMURAN with my comrades in Kharkov,Ukraine in 2008.
In a short period I found a drummer, bassist, guitarist, keyboardist and I became a vocalist.
Then we began to search for our style, but this led to many conflicts because all members tried to bring down their own musical preferences, so as a result, we have changed a lot of bass players and guitarists until we get a full line-up in spring 2009.
In the same period, we did live-demo “DEMOnized”, which includes three our songs and two covers of Amon Amarth and Belphegor. Quality was terrible, but still with this demo-recording, we were able to start on stage and made debut in a friendly biker-fest “Nothern Lands-2009.”
After that we’ve been first mentioned in the glossy magazine article))
In the end of a year we recorded one song and made another demo-tape called ” The Night Will Fall Down Again ” as online single. Until the spring of 2010 we have travelled with concerts all over Ukraine, and than we turned into a studio project.
In October 2011, we began the record of our debut album and in February 2012 it’s been mixed & mastered at one of the Kharkov studios.
At the moment, the album was released by Metal Scrap Records, now Khort and I going to recruit participants to transformate “studio project” in real band with live shows.
Also, now we are working with a new material – more technical and faster than our earlier works.

2. How would you describe your musical sound?
Vlad Rommel: First of all, our music is initially contest between two composers: master of melody and master of uncompromising hardness. We don’t have Pagan metal in music, but we use it as a lyrical component. Black metal dominates in earlier material such as DEAD and PESSIMIZM, in newer UNDER THE RUNES OF THE SUN and RISE OF HELHEIM’S BONEHANDS sound refers to Technical Death metal.
Absolutely darkness and cruelty 🙂

3.What are some of the lyrical topics and subjects the band explores with the music?
Vlad Rommel: – Main topics of the lyrics that I write for SYMURAN – war, destruction, Fire, Death, and anti-Christianity, pride, appeals to the ancient gods.
The idea of rebirth through the death flows through our music.

4. What is the meaning and inspiration behind the bands name?
Vlad Rommel:
I suggested the name SYMURAN and all the rest of the formation supported me. Actually, Symuran is demonic incarnation of one of the most important Slavic Gods – Semargl-Ognebog. Symuran – winged wolf, spewing flames, destroying in the name of Creation, killing in the name of Life.
I do not think that our formation could go through all the problems having another name.

5. I have read that the band started out as a satanic band before evolving into a more pagan direction, what what the decision behind the change?
Vlad Rommel: – It’s true: we really began our path under the inverted pentagram. Maybe we followed the fashion. However, our band was originally an anti-Christian, and not satanic. Satan is the biblical character so we rejected to use it in lyrics t and replace the pentagram symbol on Semargl.
As for me, it even looks better, more aggressive or something 🙂

6. What are some of the best shows that the band has played so far and how would you describe your stage performance?
Vlad Rommel: – The best our show was in Dnepropetrovsk in early 2010. We were headliners at extreme metal fest.
On stage, we are warriors, murderers and violent punishers. We use the war-paint, various military accessories and symbols of the pre-Christian era.
Going wild emotions pour out into the hall and are given back with a powerful roar of the crowd and active slam.

7. Do you have any touring plans for the future?
Vlad Rommel: – Unfortunately, we haven’t such plans because nowadays SYMURAN horde cosists of two people, and it is not enough to enter the stage.

8. On a worldwide level how has the feedback been to your music by fans of black, pagan and death metal?
Vlad Rommel: – The worldwide release of our debut album “Syklus av Helheim” will be only in October 1. So wait and see.

9. Are there any other musical projects besides this band or is this a full time line up?
Vlad Rommel: – Personally, I am involved in two projects with different levels: cover-poject and gothic-doom metal band. There, I’m just a vocalist and have no other responsibilities.
Khort: I have some propositions, one of them to became a member of black-doom project and I think it’s interesting.

10. What direction do you see your music heading into on future releases?
Vlad Rommel: – More technicality and aggression along with the black atmosphere.
At this point, we already have most of the material for the new album. And I assure you, it will be awesome!
Khort:Actually nobody knows how our future music will change because I think we must try to experiment to get something really hardplayed, something that included more agression speed and violence.

11. What are some bands or musical styles that have influenced your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?
Vlad Rommel: – There are a lot of bands that have influenced our music. Among them Behemoth, Zyklon, Slayer, Sepultura, Belphegor, Amon Amarth, Dark Funeral.
I listen to a lot of Pagan, Folk, Viking, Black and Death metal, also I love Blues and Punk-rock.
My favorite metal band – Slayer. Really love Nile and meditative art of Varg Vikernes.
Khort: I have many bands in my musical library, some of them are: Dark Funeral, Darkwoods My Betrothed, Penumbra, Gorgasm, Fleshgod Apocalypse, King Diamond, Nile, Hour of Penance ,Immolation and so on.

12. How would you describe your views on Paganism?
Vlad Rommel: – I am of the belief of the Slavs and Aryans of pre-Christian era, and I think that it is best alternative to the decaying world religions. Freedom, honor and pride, not subservience of our soul and repentance.
Khort: I’m not religious.

13. Outside of music what are some of your interests?
Vlad Rommel: – Beside the music, I do graphic design and cary on my family. My wife and I often travel around the country – it’s good broadens the mind 🙂
Khort: A few years ago I started to do some extreme things such as roup-jumping, parachuting etc. I want to try as much as possible to have my own opinion about all.

14. Any final words or thoughts before we wrap up this interview?
Khort: develop one’s personality: do not lose a thirst for knowledge, courage to act in conscience and justice.
Vlad Rommel: – To live according to conscience., remember that there is no future without a past and without death there is no rebirth.
Thank you for your interesting questions.

Pest Webzine, November 2012

1) Please tell us about the history of your band and its members.
SYMURAN was founded in August 25, 2008 by Vlad Rommel in Kharkiv, Ukraine.
The band started out as a satanic Blackened death metal before evolving into a more pagan direction. From that period until now, we have changed a lot of players and that’s why we have some problems with recording our new stuff.
Current members are:
Vlad Rommel – Vocals
Khort – Bass

2) How would you describe your style? Which bands influenced your music?
The name of the team comes from the Slavonic mythology and our winged fire breathing wolf as symbol perfectly captures the essence of the band. Symuran combines technical death metal with black metal in music and dark pagan was chosen as a lyrical component.
There are a lot of bands that have influenced our music: Behemoth, Zyklon, Slayer, Sepultura, Belphegor, Amon Amarth, Dark Funeral and so on.

3) Why should a metalhead buy your demos/albums?
Our debut album “Syklus av Helheim” is something like a first step. Our primary goal was to show that if you like this few songs get ready to fill more aggression and more hardness material in an upcoming full-length CD (2013).

4) What have you released so far and how were your releases received by the public/media?
In the beginning of Symuran existing , we wrote live-demo “DEMOnized”, which included three later copied our themes and two covers for Amon Amarth and Belphegor. Quality was terrible, but still it was the first demo-recording of a band. At the end of 2010 recorded another stuff called “The Night Will Fall Down Again” as web-single. The worldwide release of our debut album “Syklus av Helheim” was in October 1. I think that album reviews are more important because they show how metalheads relate to our music worldwide.

5) Do you play live as well? How’s your live activity so far?
Symuran has concerts only in a period from 2008 until 2010 and only in Ukraine, nowadays we are a studio project with a great amount of material. But we are planning to start giving live shows in the beginning of the next year…to infect our listeners not only from the dynamics of their headphones.

6) What sould labels/zines/promoters know about your band? Why should they be interested in it?
First of all, those times when Symuran was in a shadow are over. We set a goal to establish itself as band with greater persistence in making good music for death metal fans all over the world!

7) What plans do you have for the near future as a band?
The plans for the near future are to record several covers of famous metal bands with some our changes. Until the end of spring 2013, we plan to record a second album, with thirteen tracks in it. So, we hope, until the beginning of summer we can expect an official release of the new SYMURAN long-play.

8) Where can we listen to your band and where can we buy your stuff?
We already have Myspace and official page in Facebook, also VK page where you can find our latest news and ask about stuff. All questions about CD send to our worldwide distributors CODE 7 , Plastic Head Distribution or to Metal Scrap Records (Ukraine).

Queens of Steel

1. Hello, thanks for answering to our questions. What are you guys currently up to?
Khort: Hey! it’s a great pleasure to us to be interviewed by you. Symuran horde slill working for new matherial and we are trying to combine it with rehearsing with new members that recently accepted the invitation to join us. Also, we don’t miss the opportunity to devote time to the families and jobs.

2. First off, could you make some history of the band?
Khort: Our band was found in 2008 by Vlad Rommel and in a short period Symuran was in a full staff. After a few bad-quality demos we started to record our first album and in Octber 1st “Syklus av Helheim” was released by Metal Scrap Records. Current members are Vlad Rommel (vox) and Khort (bass) and, as i sad before, we’re making steps to return to give live performances again.

3. How could you describe your sound?
Khort: In Symuran first album we tryied to mix Technical death metal with fast black metal components. So we used different drums range with the deep bass sound, guitar catchy melodies and vocals range from high pitched black metal screams to deep death metal growls. So you can hear it all in “Syklus av Helheim”.

4. What are the band’s main musical influences?
Khort: There are a lot of bands that have influenced our music. Among them Behemoth, Zyklon, Slayer, Sepultura, Amon Amarth, Dark Funeral, Fleshgod Apocalypse, King Diamond, Nile, Immolation and so on. Our own personal preferences in music are very different from Pagan, Folk and Viking to Black and Death metal.

5. How is the feedback for your new album being?
Khort: We received a lot of reviews from many webzines and metalsites and still receiving it, some of them published in our VK official page. All this makes our music worthy to be played.

6. And are your personally satisfied with the final outcome?
Khort: I have conflicting answers: from the one side we made great efforts to got a quality recorded album and it sounds great, but from the other side, we are always developing ourselves so now when i’m listen to it sometimes i wanna change something in tabs or sound of an instrument in some parts. Generally, I’m satisfied with the final outcome.

7. How could you describe this opus in just 3 words?
Khort: Faster! Harder! Darker!

8. How has the production process for your new release been?
Khort: Our guitarist gives us some new riffs or a full song and then we try to think together where can we make some changes… if it’s necessary. Another important element was to create a symbolical art so special thanks to a young painter from St. Petersburg. Now we have almost all material for a Symuran full-length CD, and we shall start recording as soon as possible.

9. And how do you use to work on the songwriting?
Khort: Everybody has it’s secrets. At the moment I’m almost finished writing another song and it takes a lot of time (over 2 month) because I need some special mood and often rewrite some parts to try find something better.

10. Finally, what are you near-future?
Khort: We planed to give several concerts in the next year and please you with our new album release. Also, i hope “Queens Of Steel” will interview us again.

11. That’s all from our side, thanks again for taking your time to answer our questions. If you now want to add some final words; feel free to do it.
Khort: Stay tuned!

1. Please tell us about the history of your band and its members.
– The band was founded on August 25, 2008 in Kharkiv city, Ukraine.
At the present moment Symuran is a duet: Vlad Rommel and Khort. We work on a new material and search for new members for our crew.
Currently we perform together with other bands: I am a vocalist in black metal formation “The Hum”, Khort plays bass in industrial-project “Risenstar”.

2. How would you describe your style? Which bands influenced your music?
-We call our style “Pagan Blackened Death metal”. This is a rather technical death metal flavored with black-metal harmonies and pagan lyrics. Primarily it’s Belphegor, Behemoth, Nile, Amon Amarth, Zyklon and Sepultura.

3. Why should a metalhead buy your demos/albums?
-Because it’s worth it! Our releases are good enough even for fastidious metalheads.

4. What have you released so far and how were your releases received by the public/media?

In the end of 2011 we recorded our debut album “Syklus av Helheim” and released it with Metal Scrap Records on summer 2012. After this Symuran took part in several volumes: Twenty Years Anniversary, Cmpl#7 [2CD, Metal Scrap Records] in 2013 and Extreme Metal Compilation II: Black Messiah [CD, FONO LTD.
