A Different Shade Of Black Metal Zine

Interview was prepared by OccultBlackMetal (A Different Shade Of Black Metal Zine)

1. Can you give us an update on what is going on with the band these days?
We are preparing to the next creative year.

2. How would you describe the musical sound of the new album and also how does it differ from previous releases?
We have made big step to musical and sound senses. The Album has become heavier and more aggressive, but haven`t lost melody. We have work hard, and we hope everybody will enjoy “Transendevil”.

3. What are some of the lyrical topics and subjects the new release explores?
The bases of our lyrics anticlericalism, mystic, freedom and human development. For example: Antikrist Tabor is about Taborites(Checzk rebel`s) who rebelled against catholic church in 15-th century. We have a lot of philosophy in lyrics.

4. What is the meaning and inspiration behind the name Def/Light?
When we have young, we had snobbish and silly name “Defilers of light”. It was childish. We had to change it. We wanted to remain part of old name, but to make it more philosophical and intelligent. The word “def” is homophone to the “deaf” witch give our name two senses – “Deaf ligt” and “def light”.

5. What are some of the best shows that the band has played over the years and also how would you describe your stage performance?
We have fantastic show in Berdeev, Slovakia and in Zagan, Poland/ there were many fans, whose support of made the show much more extreme and powerful.
We trying to be active. We have a tradition to make a show with costumes and “corpse paint” Although we are sometimes blamed it is not trendy. Always, we sing our hearts out in 150%.

6. Do you have any touring or show plans for the new release?
Yes, we are planning Ukrainian tour in February or March and European tour in October. We`d like to have shows around the World. We are waiting offers from managers.

7. On a worldwide level how has the feedback been to the new album by fans of black and death metal?
The album has just become released and we don`t have many comments. But we are happy that they are all positive.

8. What direction do you see your music heading into on future releases?
I don`t think it`s right to be satisfied 100% the work. We are going to work more with symphonic music but we are not going to lose black/death metal music. Should always try to be even better.

9. What are some bands or musical styles that have influenced your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?
We listen to many kinds of different music starting from symphonic music and finishing with experimental grind core. Some musicians of the band enjoy jazz or ethnic. Dimmu Borgir, Hate, Behemoth, Flashgod Apocalypse, Anorexia Nevrosa and match other music have inspired with books, performances and human history. And life itself prompts some idea to us.

10. Does Occultism play any role in your music?
Sure occultism and mysticism is a part of our creative work. Telematics outlooks are close to us. It has philosophical and ideological meanings for us. We see the direct connection with rational and scientific ideas.

11. Outside of music what are some of your interests?
Each musician has his own interests and hobbies. As for me, I am interested in clinical psychology, philosophy and history. I am really keen of reading and writing. I am a journalist and a psychologist my profession. Generally, I above a Renaissance person who knows everything and could do everything.

12. Any final words or thoughts before we wrap up this interview?
I face a choice to write a book about it or to say just a few words. We would like to express our gratitude to all our fans and everybody who takes interests in our band and music. We want all people to be free and to develop themselves.

1. Hello! Thanks for doing this interview with us. How are the things in DEF/LIGHT lately?
Excellent. We are inspired by success of our album. This is great opportunity to improve our musical skills.

2. Tell us something about the first few years in the band’s existence. Was it difficult finding the right members for the first line-up, arranging rehearsals, doing promotion locally and eventually writing the first DEF/LIGHT songs?
At first we weren`t too serious with music. And we only were having fun. Later we got sense of our music, we started putting some ideas and we got goals. From that very moment everything became harder. In our country being a metal musician is difficult. Sometimes we get too much attention from the police. To find veliable members wasn’t on easy task. We had been play with lot of musician before we found present collective.

3. In 2010 you recorded and independently released the “Hateforhateone” debut CD, how much opportunities did that CD offer up to the band? Was it based on that that Metal Scrap offered you a recording contract?
In 2010 we released our second CD. The first one dates back to 2008. However, both Hateforhateone CD and the previous one didn’t work out the way we planned. Паша!!!!! А название одним словом это правильно.??? Или это опечатка? We don’t feel ashamed of our work but I’d rather call it “our first steps”. Due to the help of some good people, Trascendevil turned out different. The publisher had known us for quite a long time (not only by our work in 2010) and we got along well rather quickly.

4. And how you look back on those first debut CD?
Albums 2008 (DEMO) and 2010 Hateforhateone are far from being perfect. We were searching and developing. Actually, this is what we are also doing now but much better.

5. Three years later, in 2013, a second CD was cut with “Trascendental”. In what ways was this CD superior to the first one you cut in 2010?
It was better in almost every aspect: sound, level of composing, performance. “Trascendevil” is harder and more melodic at the same time. More philosophical and musical ideas are reflected in it. This is what I am grateful to the musicians, sound producers, publisher, model, photographer and ten more good people for, as well as for books, music and everything that this damn universe surrounds us with.

6. Personally, how would you describe the band’s sound in “Trascendental”?
Compact, hard and deep.

7. Can you take us through the motions of writing and recording the album? What did you really set out to achieve?
Of course. We got a great experience and though we’ve gone through some obstacles we managed to successfully find good partners. I’d like to mention the work with the studio called Pain of Darkness. The cooperation with them was excellent. We got wonderful mix from MAGNA OPERA studio (Moscow). Many hours of work and the album is ready.

8. I know it’s a tough question but can you choose your favorite song of the album?
Yes, that’s a tricky one. From the point of view of atmosphere and musical content I like Antikrist Tabor. From the point of view of lyrics I’d say Philosopher’s Garden is closer to me.

9. What can you tell us about the artwork?
I didn’t quite understand your question. If you mean the cover of the CD, it was my work as an artist, my friend (wonderful and beautiful Yevgeniya Vechnova) was a model and a talented photographer (Pavel Glushchuk). If you mean the creative work itself, it is the highest expression of spirit and will of a person. There is nothing that could better reflect the essence of a human rather than creative work. That’s why it is the most valuable thing we (musicians) have. We give out everything we have…every note.

10. Well, I’m running out of questions, so feel free to end this interview in any way you like.
Get free in your creative work, develop. Enjoy the power of your Will!!! Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the Law! 93!

THE GRINDER

THE GRINDER

Thanks for your time. Tell us about your band and what you do for your band.
Hi. Our band – DEF / LIGHT. Now it seems to us that we are playing black metal with a serious influence of doom and death. I am a vocalist and lyricist in the band. To some extent, I answer for the concept and ideology.

When did you decide you wanted to be in a band?
A long time ago I was the founder of this band.

What is different about being a musician than you imagined?
It is difficult to imagine. I have been in the world of music since 1997, and my ideas and reality have long been merged together.

What gear do you use and why?
Different this and Shure, and Focusrite, Marshall – each meets their needs.

What music do you listen to that would surprise people?
People can be surprised with anything. From the unusual in my circle, I listen to Cypress Hill, Molotov, Muse. I listen to so many things that alone can surprise.

How do we find your music and merch to buy?
We are represented on our Metal Scrap label and in many other places. We will not be too sad if you download us on the torrent or listen to the soundcloud. This is not very good, but for us it is not too important.

How did you get a record deal? Or do you want a record deal or are you DIY?
We have contracts with good labels on past albums. We received good help from them. We hope that our next album, which is really cool, will find its publisher even faster. We have a good concept, big growth musically – we will find a new publisher.

What bands do people compare your music to?
I heard a lot of things that surprised me. The album that has not yet been released is compared to Dark Funeral – it is very flattering. They used to call both Carcass and Satyricon. I do not agree with such comparisons, but this is the business of our public.

Are you pro Spotify / streaming services ? Or do you think it hurts sales?
No. I do not have a qualified opinion about this.

What’s the ultimate goal for the band?
The goal is to convey our ideas to people, to become a way to convey emotions and thoughts. And the task to become quite famous, to improve their skills, to publish and make powerful shows.

Will we see you tour?
We had several, it seems, four European tours. A large number of tours in Ukraine

Who would you love to tour with?
With creative and good people, with masters of their craft. Names are important, but secondary.

What is your favorite song of yours and why?
At the moment it is Advent Sorrow – Pestilence Shall Come and Clouds – If These Walls Could Speak, but tomorrow it may be something else. Specific topics I like my mood.

Why should people take the time to listen to your band over the thousands of other bands?
We do everything honestly. We have a number of ideas, both musical and semantic, which will be close to many. Our new album will be comparable to the literary work that breathes music and music.

What are your favorite music websites labels podcast etc?
I watch and read a lot of things. I can not determine something better.

Is imagery important to you? Do you judge albums by the cover?
I do not appreciate the albums on the covers, but this is certainly an important part of creativity. I often imagine how music can look like.

If you could choose a cover song your band mates would hate what would it be?
I think it would be a cover on Placebo Protege Moi!

Is the record or live show more important?
I really love live shows, but without a quality record in the modern world, a team can claim only a very small niche.

Name 3 people dead or alive you would want to play your music for.
Lemmy, Aaron Steintrop, David Gilmore

Lemmy Ozzy Dio and Rob Halford in a cage match who wins?
Lemmy and Ozzy go to the finals. And would Lemmy win)
